Thanks for sharing that... it brings up fond memories of Barcelona and Valencia (with tenacious_snail) and Madrid (with Les, and SarahH, and Pat, and Nancy, and Dawn... different trips).
I wonder if you were hit with the Peugeot because you were from the States and therefore assumed to be unapprciative of anything performance-wise in rental cars. I've encountered that attitude before... Getting the lemon-models because I'm assumed to be incapable of noticing the difference in handling or performance.
